On 19-20th March 1981 a severe storm in Northland caused the Kerikeri river to flood, 265mm+ of rain fell in 24 hours. The Kerikeri River flooded and Kemp House was inundated to window sill level on the ground floor. The gardens were destroyed.

There were many personal and tragic stories, the tragic death of Mrs Peggy Christophers when the flood waters hit her home at Waipapa Landing, and the remarkable story of how Mr Alan Gilbert was saved when his whole house washed away.

Afterwards the generosity of people around the country contributing to the clean-up fund, and the collective efforts of those in the community who had not suffered damage. The Fire Brigade and its station acted as a headquarters over the next week, and many volunteers did not see their homes for several days.
