DescriptionKaikohe was originally a Māori village called Ōpango.
In the early 1800's during a siege by a rival tribe, members of the village were forced to feed off the berries of the Kohekohe, this was how Kaikohe got its name.
A railway link from Whangarei via Otira reached Kaikohe in 1914.
During the 2nd World War Kaikohe was a base for a US Army hospital and an Air Force bomer base.
